Our newest projects, always designed to fit their owners beautifully, encompass a range of architectural styles, From a Craftsman-inspired urban duplex, to a retirement home on Australia's Gold Coast, to a post-modern take on shed-style house design, John Gower and B.C. Mountain Homes have designed many new solutions to suit our clients' needs and desires.
Watler house Watler House, Maple Bay, B.C.
On a hillside perched above Maple Bay, on BC's Vancouver Island, this 2700 SF residence takes full advantage of the cliff-top view while maintaining a sense of solidity and security. The house is nestled amid natural Arbutus and Oak trees; its colours and exterior finishes are inspired by its surroundings. Indoor spaces flow freely to the outdoors through french doors, extensive glazing, and decks and patios on three sides.
Sherkat house Sherkat/Beaven House, Whistler, B.C.
A narrow, steep lot, with wonderful views across the valley to Whistler and Blackcomb ski areas, inspired this timber frame "hybrid" home. A framework of recycled fir timbers supports not only the unique barrel-vaulted ceiling above the living and dining areas but also the entire main roof. Elsewhere, conventional framing is used to cut costs and simplify construction.
Watler house Ballance Residence Renovation, Nelson. B.C.
Renovations often bring dramatic changes to a home but seldom as much as this makeover and second-storey addition.
Starr house Starr/Rehwald House, Nelson. B.C.
Our clients wanted an “elegant farmhouse” to grace their exquisite riverside property. This home, an extensively altered version of our Elwyn plan, manages to look simultaneously contemporary and classic.
Collier house Collier House Addition, Nelson B.C.
This 650 SF addition to a former artist's studio on a dramatic clifftop location contains a new kitchen, bath, bedroom, and main entry. Consistent roof slopes and exterior finishes, along with careful detailing, tie the new architecture seamlessly into the existing building.
Sommerville house Sommerville/Fleck House Nelson B.C.
The owners of this 1500 square-foot retirement retreat approached us with a vision of a classic country house with steep-roofed central section and wrap-around porches. While the home shows its historical roots, the resulting look is completely contemporary.
Munro house Munro House, North Nelson, B.C.
Originally planned as a renovation to an existing house, this craftsman-inspired home was eventually constructed from the ground up in a serene orchard setting. View the plan.
Grise house Gower/Grise House, Nelson, B.C.
Elegant and suprisingly spacious living in 920 SF, this adaptation of a basic farmhouse blends new and old. A vaulted ceiling over the living area makes a small space feel big and the many windows bring light and views from every side.
Weberg house Weberg House, Nelson. B.C.
Our clients were clear about what they wanted for their lakeside site: a new home that looked like it belonged among its 70- and 80-year-old neighbours. Traditional siding, shingles, trim, and ornamentation works with the traditional roof forms for an effect that is "timeless".
Werth house Werth House, Nelson, B.C.
A home for an artist tucked into a birch forest, its spacious and light-filled interior belies its modest first impressions.
Sowiak house Sowiak House, Nelson, B.C.
Our clients sought a design with a traditional "farmhouse" feel to fit their site in a former pasture. A timber-framed verandah runs the full length of the south side; careful detailing makes the house look as if it's always been there.
Candy house Candy/Elder House, Lantzville. B.C.
During construction, the stick-framed roof of this house, with its dramatic hips and many dormers, was an endless source of fascination for passers-by. Now, sitting tranquilly amidst its abundant garden, it too looks like it's always been there. Siding, flooring, and interior trim have all been milled in traditional patterns by the owner to create a one-of-a-kind home.
Gower Kelowna house Gower Residence, Vernon, B.C.
A wide open, sunny site was a fitting place for this southwest-inspired 1200 SF single level home. From the natural posts and beams to the contoured stucco, saltillo tile floor, and adobe fireplace, this light-filled house fits well amidst the sagebrush and bunchgrass of its surroundings.
Neufeld house Neufeld House, North Nelson, B.C.
This cedar-shingled, 2-bedroom "cottage" was built by its owners over the course of a summer and seems to fit with many people's image of the ideal country home.
